Minster Dreams, St Ives

Minster Dreams is a self-contained apartment a short walk from Porthminster beach and the centre of St Ives, and guests who have brought dogs here have enjoyed the location and the comfortable, well-equipped space. One couple travelling with their dog called it a perfect spot, lovely and clean and great for dogs.

There is, though, one important thing to know before you book with a dog. Access to the apartment is up a narrow spiral staircase in a turret - around forty steps - and guests have been clear that this suits a young, mobile dog far better than an older or larger one that cannot be carried. If your dog can't manage steep, tight stairs, this is not the right base; if they are fit and surefooted, it is manageable. The surrounding streets are also hilly, as much of St Ives is, so it is worth factoring the walk up and down into your plans.

Beyond the access, the apartment itself is comfortable and central, with a walled courtyard for some outdoor space and an easy walk to the beaches and town. The road in is steep and single-track with low bridges, so a large van or motorhome won't get down - a car is the safer bet.

St Ives is a rewarding base for dogs outside the busy summer months. The harbour, the coast path, and the lanes through town give plenty of walking close at hand, though it is worth checking the seasonal dog restrictions on the main town beaches such as Porthmeor and Porthminster before you travel, as these apply in peak months.

For an active couple with a fit, stair-friendly dog who want a central St Ives base near Porthminster beach, Minster Dreams works well - just go in with clear eyes about the turret staircase.
