Nant Cafn - Hafan Hideaways Eryri

Nant Cafn is a small cabin on a working hill farm at Llanymawddwy, at the head of the Dyfi valley on the edge of Eryri, and for the right dog it is close to ideal. The cabin is compact but properly finished, with a log burner inside, a hot tub outside and views straight up the valley, and the fenced ground around it means a dog can be out with you in the evening without a lead or a tether.

Guests travelling with dogs consistently pick out that fenced area as the thing that makes the stay work. It turns a one-room cabin into somewhere a dog can come and go while you sit outside with the mountains in front of you, which is not something most cabins of this size can offer. The hosts are farmers rather than hoteliers, and the welcome reflects that, with practical local advice on walks and places to eat and a quick answer when something is needed.

The walking is the point of coming. Footpaths climb from the farm into the Aran and Dyfi hills, the river and waterfalls are within earshot of the cabin, and Bwlch y Groes, one of the highest road passes in Wales, is a few minutes up the valley. The nearest pub is about a quarter of an hour away by car, so it is worth arriving with food in the boot; the cabin has gas hobs, a fridge and a barbecue.

The caveat matters, and it is about the farm rather than the accommodation. This is a livestock holding: sheep and cattle are around, horses graze the field beside the cabin, working dogs are kennelled on the yard and a farm dog moves around freely. A long lead is the standard advice from guests who bring dogs, recall needs to be reliable, and a dog that reacts badly to other dogs or cannot be trusted around stock is better left at home. Some parties have decided against bringing theirs once they understood the setup, and that is a fair call rather than a complaint.
