Netherscar, Ingleton

Netherscar is a large stone house high above Ingleton in the Yorkshire Dales, with the Three Peaks laid out in front of it and footpaths leaving straight from the door. For dog owners that setting is the whole point: there is a big garden, no neighbours to speak of, and walks of every length available without getting back in the car. Guests have brought two dogs alongside children and grandparents without difficulty, which says something about the space on offer.

Two well-behaved pets are welcome, arranged with the owners in advance rather than simply turned up with. There is one restriction that matters and is easy to miss: dogs are not allowed in the sun lounge, which is the room with the panoramic view over Whernside and Ribblehead. Guests travelling with dogs have found that genuinely disappointing, because it is the room you would otherwise spend the evening in, so factor it into how you plan the stay.

The location earns the 4.5/5 paw rating on its own. Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent are all walkable from the property, the Ingleton waterfalls trail is close, and Morecambe and the coast are within driving distance for a change of scene. Grocery deliveries reach the house, which makes a long self-catering stay straightforward.

The house is showing its age and there are practical points to plan around. The water supply is private and runs peaty and brown, and a notice in the kitchen asks guests not to drink it, so bring bottled water for both you and the dog, and more of it than you would expect to need. The central heating is thermostat-locked, which guests have found too cool in autumn and winter, with a coal fire in the living room as the alternative. Wear and tear and a general need for renovation come up regularly, and there are kennelled dogs on a neighbouring property that can be heard barking from outside.

Netherscar suits walkers with dogs who want remoteness, room and views above everything else, and who will pack for a house that is rural and a little rough around the edges rather than freshly refurbished. Finding it takes care too, because the postcode drops you at the wrong lane, so follow the owners' directions rather than the satnav.
