How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 14 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 10 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 6.2/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.

Pet-friendly summary
Nutwood is a roomy bungalow near the southern tip of Windermere that works well for families and groups bringing dogs, though its upkeep has drawn real criticism. Dog owners love the location and the secure back garden, which opens straight off the conservatory, but the property's mixed overall guest ratings are reflected in its 3.5/5 paw rating.
The enclosed rear garden is the highlight for most dog-owning guests, with labradors, cockapoos, retrievers and puppies all mentioned as having had the run of it safely. The location is excellent for a Lakes holiday: the Lakeside steamers, the steam railway to Haverthwaite and the aquarium are a few minutes away, and woodland walks up towards Finsthwaite and High Dam start close by. Up to two pets are allowed, and many groups bring two.
The caveats are significant. There is no pavement on the short road to Lakeside, so walking there means walking in the road; most guests managed it carefully, but one family felt there was no safe way to walk their dog anywhere and drove instead. Ticks are common on the nearby walks, so check your dog daily. More seriously, one family's dog started scratching on arrival and they found what appeared to be a flea part-way through the week, and several guests reported dust, mould in the bathroom and conservatory, broken heating, a weak shower and wasp nests in the garden. Parking is limited to the drive, as the road is private.
For dog owners who prioritise a secure garden and a superb Lakeside location and are prepared to overlook tired decor, Nutwood can work well, but it's worth checking recent feedback on cleanliness before booking.
