Oak, Kea

Oak is a large timber lodge on a private estate just outside Truro, and it is about as easy a place to bring dogs as Cornwall offers. It sits at the quieter end of a small cluster of lodges, with an enclosed deck off the open-plan living space and the estate's old golf course right across the way: a walk of about a mile down to the gate that most guests fall into doing first thing and last thing every day, much of it off the lead.

Up to two pets can stay. The layout suits a party travelling with dogs, with three bedrooms, a big open kitchen and living room looking out over the grounds, and doors straight onto the decking so muddy paws never cross the whole lodge. Guests with dogs talk about the space more than anything else, and about how little of the stay involves getting back in the car.

The on-site manager comes up repeatedly in guest feedback as the reason stays go smoothly: visible when needed, invisible when not, and quick to find things guests had not thought to ask for. There is a cafe on the estate serving breakfast and lunch, which saves a trip into town on a slow morning, and the lodge is step-free inside and out, which guests using a wheelchair have found genuinely workable.

Truro is close enough for a supermarket run, and the estate makes a sensible base for both coasts. The long sweep of sand at St Ives Bay is an easy drive, as are Newquay and the south-coast fishing villages, though Cornish beaches vary on seasonal dog restrictions so it is worth checking before you set off.

The only recurring gripe is cleanliness at the margins, with cobwebs, dusty skirting boards and the tops of picture frames all noted, alongside advice to travel with your own cleaning bits and a spare toilet roll. Nothing about the dog welcome itself draws complaints, and the lodge earns a 4.8/5 paw rating.

Best suited to a group or family with dogs who want space, grounds to walk in without driving, and a base within reach of both Cornish coasts.
