Peacehaven Retreat is a small self-catering studio on Ranelagh Road in Weymouth, about four minutes on foot from the beach, and its main appeal for dog owners is simple: the first and last walk of the day need no car. The pet terms are published rather than left to a conversation at booking. One pet is allowed per stay for an extra £25, paid at check-out, which is a per-stay charge rather than a nightly one and so better value over a week than for a single night.

Feedback from guests who brought a dog is limited and split. The hosts come across well, described as available around the clock and flexible over arrival and departure times, and the location is praised almost without exception. The studio itself draws more criticism. Guests have reported stained upholstery and carpet, a sofa bed and mattress that need replacing, and dog hair and a doggy smell left on the soft furnishings from earlier stays, which matters if you are choosing the place because it takes pets and expect it to be kept with that in mind. No dog equipment is provided, so bring bowls, a bed and towels. The shared hallway has been described as grubby, and smoke from a neighbouring flat can drift in.

Parking is the other practical point. There is no dedicated space, and guests have paid around £18 for two days in a car park roughly ten minutes away, which is worth factoring in with a dog and luggage to carry. Weymouth's main sands restrict dogs over the summer season, with dog-friendly stretches at either end of the bay open all year, so check the current council map if you are travelling between May and September.

That mix of a well-placed, fairly priced base with responsive hosts, let down by housekeeping and tired furnishings, is why it sits mid-table rather than near the top for dog owners.

Best suited to a solo traveller or a couple with one small or medium dog who value a walkable beach location over polish, and who are happy to bring their own kit.
