Pet-friendly summary
Penholm is a big, fun group house on the North Wales coast where dogs are very much part of the party. Families celebrating birthdays and reunions with one or two dogs along consistently rave about it, and it earns a 4.8/5 paw rating.
Dogs are well catered for. The house takes up to two pets per booking, the grounds are fenced, and the welcome hamper has included something for the dogs as well as the people. The beach at Penmaenmawr is close by and gets a particular mention as a great spot for dogs, and the North Wales Path passes nearby, so longer walks start from the house.
For the humans, Penholm has a lot to keep a large group busy: themed bedrooms, two living rooms so adults and children can spread out, a games room with a jukebox, a cinema room, a hot tub and a balcony with sunset views over the sea. Guests describe it as spotless and thoughtfully equipped, down to pushchairs and walking sticks.
The owner lives nearby and gets warm praise for being responsive, from answering questions before arrival to dropping off a gas bottle for the barbecue. Parking is officially for four cars, though groups have fitted more by parking nose to tail.
A few small drawbacks come up. The only downstairs toilet is in the en suite of the downstairs bedroom, and some bedrooms have no wardrobe or hanging space. With twenty people and a couple of dogs it is a busy house, so a nervous dog may need a quiet corner of its own.
For a big family celebration on the coast where the dogs are invited too, Penholm is hard to beat.
