How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 2 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 16 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.8/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: September 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.

Pet-friendly summary
Perch is one of four shepherd's huts spread around a private fishing lake at Hastingford Fishery, on farmland at Hadlow Down a few miles east of Uckfield in the Sussex Weald. It sits back from the water with a view over the top lake and is a little larger than some of the others, but the land rather than the hut is what makes it work for a dog: open fields, woodland and lakeside paths starting where you park.
Up to two dogs can stay, charged at £10 each - the listings do not say whether that is per night or per stay, so check when you book. Dogs need to stay on a lead anywhere near the lakes and the farmyard, which is the trade-off for having water and livestock this close, and there is always a fenced field available for off-lead running, with poo bags provided on request. Larger secure dog-walking fields can be booked on site, there is no size limit on dogs, and dogs should not be left in the hut unattended.
The owners are the other reason guests come back. People travelling with dogs describe a welcome that is warm without being fussy - fresh croissants brought round in the morning, a proper welcome pack, and quick, helpful answers before arrival. Because the huts are spread around the lake rather than lined up together, the site stays quiet even when it is full, which suits a dog that is unsettled by close neighbours.
It is a small space, and that is the main caveat. A shepherd's hut sleeps two, taller guests have found it cramped, and there is no enclosed private garden attached to the hut itself - the fenced field does that job instead. Ashdown Forest is about seven kilometres away and Buxted Park closer still if you want a change of ground.
It suits a couple with one or two dogs who want somewhere still and rural with water, open fields and no neighbours to speak of, and who do not need much indoor room.
