Pet-friendly summary
Plumcot Halt is a restored railway carriage at the bottom of a garden on Hollow Lane, a walk from the centre of Canterbury, and it is one of the more characterful places in the city to bring a dog. The setting does most of the work: it is private, quiet and green, with the owners' garden around it and orchard footpaths and countryside within walking distance, so a dog gets a proper walk without a drive.
There is one condition here that matters more than anything else, and it is worth planning around. Dogs cannot be left in the carriage unattended, even for a short period. If your day involves anywhere that will not take a dog, whether that is a restaurant, the cathedral or a shop in the city, you need a plan for the dog rather than an hour back at the accommodation. Guests who arrived without knowing this have worked around it, but described having to rearrange the day to do so.
Space is the other consideration. The carriage is beautifully restored and thoughtfully equipped, but it is a carriage: two people plus a dog fills it, and travellers with a larger dog have found it tight. The owners live in the house at the front, keep dogs of their own, and get consistently warm reviews for being friendly and full of local advice without being intrusive.
For location it is hard to fault. The city centre is a short walk, there are orchard and countryside routes straight from the lane, and there is a craft brewery within walking distance for the end of one.
Best suited to a couple with a small or medium dog who want somewhere unusual and quiet within walking distance of a city, and whose plans do not depend on leaving the dog behind. It earns a 4.3/5 paw rating.
