Primrose, Glastonbury

Primrose is one of a small group of chalets on a quiet smallholding at West Pennard, a few miles east of Glastonbury, and it is the setting that makes it work for dogs. The chalets sit on open ground with horses grazing alongside, a lake on the land and footpaths leading straight off it, so the first walk of the day takes no driving at all. Dogs are welcome, though the property's listing now caps a booking at one pet, so check first if you are travelling with more. The chalet is a single-bedroom layout but a generous one, with a full kitchen, a large walk-in shower room and a covered veranda that gets used in most weathers. Parking sits right beside the chalet, which saves hauling a wet dog across a car park.

The important caveat is the livestock. There is no fenced or enclosed area around the chalet and horses graze the surrounding land, so dogs need to stay on the lead outside rather than roam. Guests with dogs have asked for a fenced-off section more than once, and it is the single thing that would make the site easier with a dog whose recall is unreliable. The lake is open water rather than a dog-swimming pond and is best treated as such.

Inside, the chalets are consistently described as spotless and fully equipped, and the hosts have a reputation for being welcoming while leaving guests to themselves. The main shops are about ten minutes away by car, which you will want: the bus is roughly two-hourly and the stop is a walk from the site.
