Unique Private Wood Cabin near Jurassic Coast in Dorset Countryside

This is a self-contained wood cabin at West Lea in Bere Regis, set in open Dorset countryside between Dorchester and Wareham and within easy reach of the Jurassic Coast. It is a single-unit property with its own garden and parking, and the setting is the main event: long views, quiet nights and sunsets from the deck. For dog owners it has the format that usually works best, which is a whole private building with no shared space and a door straight out onto grass.

Dogs settle here. That comes through repeatedly from guests travelling with them, including owners whose dogs are unsettled in other places, and the hosts are described as attentive and easy to deal with. The cabin is well equipped for self-catering, with proper cooking facilities, and it works as a base for the coast path, for Corfe Castle and Lulworth, and for walking straight out into farmland.

Two things need flagging before you book. The first is that dogs cannot be left in the cabin unattended, and guests have been caught out by discovering this on arrival rather than at the point of booking, so plan the days around taking the dog with you. The second is the outdoor space. The front garden is fenced but small, and dog owners have not felt comfortable letting a dog run around out there unsupervised. It is an enclosed spot to sit with a dog, not a secure paddock to let one loose in.

The decking is the other recurring warning, and it applies at both ends of the year: guests have found it badly slippery in rain and again in ice, and a fall has been reported. In summer the cabin heats up, there is no window that opens at night, and the practical fix guests have settled on is leaving the patio door open, which is a calculation worth making if your dog is likely to wander. Smaller faults come up too, including the hot and cold control on the shower and a slow kitchen drain, and there is some road noise when you are sitting out in the garden.

Best suited to a couple or a solo traveller with a well-settled dog who want quiet countryside with the coast half an hour away, and who are content to take the dog along rather than leave it behind. A cooler month suits the cabin better than a heatwave.
