How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 16 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 9 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.2/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: July 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.

Pet-friendly summary
Prospect Lodge is a characterful little Lakeland cottage in the village of Portinscale, a short walk across the fields from Keswick and the shores of Derwentwater. For dog owners it has genuine appeal: the ground floor has an original stone-flagged kitchen that shrugs off wet paws and muddy boots, there is a porch handy for drying off after a walk, and the setting is superb, with a footpath straight from the door into Keswick and dog-friendly pubs in the village.
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome, and plenty of guests have brought theirs happily over the years, from border collies to Jack Russells. The walks are the real draw, and the cottage makes a comfortable, cosy base for exploring the northern Lakes with a dog in tow.
There is one important thing to understand before you book, because it comes up again and again from guests travelling with dogs. The cottage is arranged over three floors, and dogs are only allowed on the ground floor, which is the kitchen and diner. They are not permitted upstairs in the first-floor lounge or the bedroom. In practice this means your dog cannot settle with you in the evening while you relax in the lounge, and several owners have found this genuinely disappointing, to the point of saying they would not return with a dog. Whether it matters will depend on your dog and your holiday: an easygoing dog that is content to settle in a warm kitchen will be fine, but if yours expects to curl up beside you in the evenings, this layout will feel restrictive.
The enclosed outdoor space is also modest. It is a small gated yard by the front steps rather than a proper garden, and it sits close to a road where people and dogs pass by, so it is not somewhere a dog can be left to potter for long.
Prospect Lodge suits dog owners who are out walking most of the day and want a clean, characterful cottage in a brilliant Lake District location, and whose dog is happy to bed down on the ground floor at night. Owners who want their dog with them in every room are better looking elsewhere. On balance it earns a 3.2/5 paw rating: a warm welcome for dogs and a wonderful setting, held back by a floor restriction that a lot of dog owners wish they had known about sooner.
