How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 3 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 92 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.7/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Rainors Farm Cottage is a cosy, surprisingly roomy self-catering apartment on a working farm just outside Gosforth, and it makes a good base for dog owners heading into the quieter western Lake District. Wast Water and the Wasdale fells are around a 20-minute drive away, the coast is close too, and there are walks nearby, including routes onto the Wainwright fells.
Guests travelling with dogs describe it as dog friendly and easy to settle into, with plenty of parking and a homely interior. The owners leave fresh farm eggs and milk along with teas, coffees and small treats, and the general guest score is an excellent 9.7/10.
The farm setting is a large part of the appeal, but it needs some thought with a dog. Chickens and ducks roam freely around the cottage and the front garden is not fenced, so dog owners have found they need to keep their dog on a lead even for a quick comfort break. The farm also keeps working dogs of its own, which are contained for much of the day but can bark when guests walk past, something to bear in mind with a reactive dog.
Most stays are very positive, but there are occasional complaints of a draughty bedroom, a cottage colder than expected and slow replies from the hosts over a cleanliness issue, so it is worth raising anything early.
For dog owners whose dog is relaxed around livestock and happy on a lead, Rainors Farm Cottage earns a 4.6/5 paw rating as a characterful farm base for the Lakes.
