Ramsey Rooms is a set of modern serviced apartments on the High Street in Ramsey, right in the middle of the small Cambridgeshire market town, and the format suits a dog well: your own front door, a separate bedroom upstairs, a kitchen and laundry downstairs, and no shared corridors or lifts to negotiate on the way out for a walk.

Guests travelling with dogs rate the location. The town sits on the edge of the fens with open ground and quiet lanes close by, and the shops and the pub across the road are near enough that a dog never has to be left alone for long. Owners of smaller dogs in particular describe it as a straightforward, no-fuss place to bring a pet, clean and tidy and comfortable enough for a couple with a dog in tow.

The caveat is serious and needs stating plainly: in warm weather the apartments hold heat badly. Guests who stayed in summer with dogs describe the room sitting above 28C overnight despite two fans, open windows and doors, and buying a portable air conditioning unit and car window reflectors at their own expense to keep their dogs comfortable. They found the owner unsympathetic when they raised it by phone. The same stays flagged a privacy problem: the room looks straight onto the neighbouring pub's beer garden with no nets, and drinkers have come to the bedroom door to look in at the dogs inside. Those reviews are what pull the paw rating down to 3.5 out of 5, and they are worth taking seriously.

Two smaller points recur. The listing has advertised an oven that was not in the apartment, which is expensive to discover after a supermarket run, and the stairs are steep and slippery in the dark. Ramsey Rooms is a reasonable, well-priced base for a dog owner visiting the area outside the summer months, especially with a small dog who will not mind a compact space. If you are travelling between roughly June and September, ask the property directly what cooling your particular apartment has before you book.
