Pet-friendly summary

Renovated Miner’s Cottage is set up by owners who clearly have dogs in mind. It is a terraced house in Six Bells, on the edge of Abertillery, and the practical touches are what dog owners keep coming back to: a gate across the kitchen doorway, so a dog can be shut somewhere safe and warm overnight rather than roaming the house, and blanket throws left out so they can be up on the sofa without anyone worrying about the furniture. Parties bringing more than one dog have had no trouble.

The location does a lot of the work. There is a community park with tennis courts directly across the road, a ramblers’ footpath at the end of the street, and neighbours who happily point guests towards the local walks. Beyond that the valley opens out quickly: the Guardian of the Valley miners’ memorial is a few minutes away, and Goytre Wharf and the edge of the Brecon Beacons are within about half an hour. The street itself is residential and quiet.

Two things to prepare for. The back terrace has steep steps and the garden is not secure, so a dog cannot simply be let out; guests have had to block the steps off themselves to keep dogs away from them. And the house sits somewhere between renovated and due another round: the living and dining room flooring is worn and taped down in places, which makes it hard to clean properly after a muddy walk, and there is damp visible near the bottom of the stairs. The wall heaters take some working out.

Best suited to a family with one or two dogs who want a valleys base with walking on the doorstep, and who are happy with a warm, well-decorated house that has some rough edges. It earns a 4.2/5 paw rating.
