Pet-friendly summary
Roosters is one of three cottages on a small working smallholding a couple of miles outside Lostwithiel, and the setting is most of the reason dog owners keep going back. There is a small enclosed garden attached to the cottage, big enough for a pair of retrievers to potter in, and beyond it a large field and a pond that guests are welcome to walk around with their dogs on the lead. Several visitors return year after year, and the field is the reason they give: an early-morning run before breakfast without getting in the car.
Inside, the cottage is a character building kept spotlessly clean and equipped well enough that guests report not needing to bring anything with them. Dog towels are provided, and a welcome tray of scones, clotted cream, jam and a bottle of Cornish wine is waiting on arrival. The owners live on site and are described as helpful without hovering, which is the balance most people want on a self-catering week.
A few things follow from this being a real smallholding. There are sheep in the field, along with a pony, tortoises and the owners' own dogs about the place, so it is a much better fit for a dog that is relaxed around livestock and other dogs than one that is not, and the lead is not optional around the pond and the flock. The lane down to Lostwithiel is a narrow, winding country road and the village is a fifteen to twenty minute walk, so most guests drive in for the three pubs, the bakery and the shop.
The position works for the whole county, about ten minutes to Bodmin and within easy reach of Fowey, Polkerris, the Eden Project and both coasts, and the cottage is quiet enough that the loudest thing outside is usually the sheep.
