Dogs cost £10 per pet for the whole stay rather than per night, and need to be arranged in advance. Pets are only accepted in some of the apartments: apartments 4, 5, 6 and 7, the garden-view and mostly ground-floor units, take them, while apartments 2 and 3 on the first floor do not. Book one of the pet-friendly units by name rather than assuming any apartment will do. Throws are provided so dogs stay off the furniture, and arriving guests are routinely handed towels, a bowl and a bag of treats for the dog.
The owners are the other half of it. Dog owners consistently describe being shown round on arrival and given useful tips on dog-friendly walks, beaches and places to eat, with Cockington Country Park a regular recommendation. Cats have been made welcome too, treats included. The apartments themselves come across as spotless and well equipped for self-catering, with comfortable beds and a proper kitchen.
Each apartment has its own space in a private car park, which takes the stress out of arriving with a dog, a crate and luggage, and there is a well-kept garden at the front with tables and chairs. Shops, pubs and a regular bus stop are close by, so a car can stay parked for most of the week.
The caveats are small. Shower rooms in some apartments are tight, and there is no television in the bedrooms. The bigger practical point is the room restriction above, since the pet-friendly apartments can book up first in busy weeks.
