Shropshire Guesthouse is a self-contained annexe in the Shropshire countryside near Claverley, a few miles west of Wolverhampton, and it has quietly become one of the easiest places in the West Midlands to arrive with a dog. Guests bringing two dogs report the same experience as those bringing one: treats and biscuits left out for them, a garden to use, and hosts who treat the dogs as part of the booking rather than an exception to it.

The accommodation is a compact suite with its own lounge, kitchen and shower room, set inside a gated plot with the owners' family living next door. That arrangement is what dog owners end up praising most. Someone is always around to let you in late, sort out a problem or point you at a walk, without ever being in your way. The stock of extras runs deep too, with bread, milk and coffee provided and wine and beer available to buy, so a late arrival with a tired dog does not mean going out again.

It is a practical base rather than a destination in itself. A good pub is a minute's walk, the lanes around Claverley and Worfield give quiet field walking, and Wolverhampton, Bridgnorth and the Severn Valley are all a short drive. Guests routinely use it as a stopover on a long north-south run and then wish they had booked longer.

The one thing to know is the road. The property sits on a busy main road, and while it is quiet at night, pulling out of the entrance takes care because visibility in one direction is limited, so it is not a place to let a dog off the lead anywhere near the gate. The bedroom is on the snug side once the furniture is in. Those caveats aside, dog owners are close to unanimous here, and the 4.8/5 paw rating reflects it: a strong pick for couples with one or two dogs who want somewhere calm, secure and genuinely welcoming.
