Silver Cottage

Silver Cottage is one of the more deliberately dog-aware whole-house rentals in our Dartmouth set. Guests with dogs mention not just being allowed, but being actively welcomed: a small bag of treats waiting on arrival, and a welcome booklet that points out the dog-friendly beaches and cafes within walking distance of the cottage. That's the sort of pre-arrival thought that tells you the hosts have run this as a pet-aware let for a while.

Location is the other big tick. The cottage is walkable to the centre of Dartmouth, which means you can stroll to the riverside for an evening drink without a long road walk, and pop into the town for groceries without needing the car. Dartmouth itself is one of the more dog-friendly small towns on the south Devon coast (river paths, ferries that take dogs, a string of pubs that welcome them) and a cottage you can walk from is a real upgrade over a property that needs a drive to reach the action.

Two things to factor in. Parking is described as easy in shoulder season and difficult in peak summer - if you're travelling July-August with a car and a dog, plan to find a spot once and walk for the rest of the day rather than hopping in and out. And the sofa and chairs are described as not the most comfortable for a long sit-in evening, so this is more of a base for doing things outside than for cozy nights on the couch.

The Agoda listing doesn't carry detail on whether there's a pet fee, weight cap, or breed restrictions, so a direct message to the host is worth sending before you book - particularly if you've got a larger dog or are bringing more than one. The hosts are described as responsive (a dripping tap got a callback within half an hour), so that conversation should be quick.

Best suited to: small or medium dogs whose owners want a base they can walk from, couples or small families who'll spend more time out in Dartmouth than indoors, and travellers who'll appreciate the thoughtful pet-aware touches at arrival.
