Skelwith Bridge Hotel

The Skelwith Bridge Hotel sits in the small hamlet of Skelwith Bridge, a few miles west of Ambleside in the heart of the southern Lake District. It is a working hotel with bar and restaurant rather than a B&B, and has built a strong, consistent dog-friendly following among walking-led travellers on the Loughrigg / Langdale circuit and along the river-to-falls walk that the village is named for.

The dog-welcome detail is more thoughtful than at most country hotels. The restaurant offers a doggie menu - a feature only a handful of UK hotels actually have - and the breakfast service has been specifically called out for offering dogs a sausage. Dogs are welcomed in the bar and restaurant as well as the rooms, and one solo guest with a reactive dog reported the staff being notably accommodating. The hotel sits within short walking distance of Skelwith Force waterfall and on the lower slopes for Loughrigg Fell and the Langdales.

Two practical honest caveats. First, the building is showing its age - several recent pet-travelling guests have described the rooms as a touch tired or dated, with mentions of out-of-date bathrooms and heating that is either too hot or absent. Cleanliness has been mostly fine but not perfectly consistent. Second, the bar runs short on stocked drinks at times and the menu has not always had everything on the card available. Neither caveat has stopped guests recommending the property for the location and dog-welcome.
