South Downs Haven, Buriton

South Downs Haven is a small self-contained annexe at the end of a lane in Buriton, a village tucked under the downs just south of Petersfield, and its appeal for dog owners is mostly about what waits outside the door. A public footpath starts directly opposite, fields wrap around the property on most sides, and there is a country park within easy reach for a longer outing. Guests with dogs talk about the walking first and the accommodation second.

The building is honest but modest, and it pays to be clear about what you are booking. It is listed as a one-bedroom house; in practice it is a single room with a separate bathroom, converted from a garage, holding a bed, a small table and two chairs. That works well for a night or two visiting family or breaking a journey down the A3, and less well as a week's holiday base where you would want a sofa to spread out on. It is spotlessly clean, well equipped and good value, the hosts leave milk in the fridge for the first cup of tea, and they are quick to answer if you need anything.

The dog-specific caveat is the road. The property sits close enough to it that guests have not felt able to let a dog off the lead on arrival or last thing at night, and there is no enclosed garden of the kind a puppy or a bolter needs. This is a place for a dog that is content on a lead around the property and takes its freedom on the footpaths instead.

A few practical notes: the lane is unlit and genuinely dark, so bring a torch for the late walk; there is an oven but no microwave; and small fittings such as bathroom hooks and cupboard handles have been reported as loose.

Best for one or two people with a lead-trained dog who want downland walking on the doorstep and are travelling light.
