St Michaels House is about as well prepared for dogs as a self-catering cottage gets. It sits in St Helens, a quiet village on the eastern side of the Isle of Wight between Bembridge and Ryde, and the owners stock it with dog beds, blankets, towels, water bowls and treats before you arrive, so the boot can stay half empty. The garden is long, sunny and properly enclosed, and guests travelling with escape-minded dogs report it holding up well. Up to two pets can stay.
What lifts it above the average is the welcome. The owners live locally and come over to meet guests, walk them round the house and point out the good beaches and walks, usually leaving a home-baked cake, milk and the makings of a first cup of tea. Dog owners describe being actively encouraged rather than merely tolerated, and returning guests are common: a good share of the reviews come from people on their second, third or fourth stay.
The location does a lot of the work. The village shop and the pub are a short stroll, there is a cafe for coffee and cake, and the walk across St Helens causeway to the Duver and the beach is the standard morning outing. Dog-friendly beaches are a couple of minutes away, Bembridge is walkable, and the rest of the island is an easy drive. Red squirrels turn up in the garden, which is a novelty for most visitors.
The building is old and behaves like it. The stairs are steep, with handrails on both sides, and the ceilings are low enough that taller guests report meeting the beams more than once despite the warning signs. Both are worth thinking about if your dog sleeps upstairs with you, or if you are likely to be carrying an older dog up and down. Several guests note it is cosier inside than the photographs suggest, and there is parking for one vehicle only. Those caveats aside, the pet provision here is the most thorough in this part of the island, and the 4.9 out of 5 paw rating reflects it.
