Stable Cottage, Oddington

Stable Cottage sits on Black Pitts Farm at Oddington, down a track surrounded by open fields in the north Cotswolds, and the setting is what makes it work for a dog. There is no lobby, no corridor and no other building within earshot except the farm itself, so arriving and coming and going with a dog is about as low-friction as it gets.

The farm is working land with horses and resident farm dogs who tend to come and say hello. For a sociable dog that is a genuine bonus, and a guest who brought their own small dog describes exactly that, the dog delighted to meet them. For a dog that is wary of other dogs or unused to livestock it is a reason to think twice, and to keep the lead on around the yard and the fields until you know how they will settle.

The cottage itself is cosy, well equipped and consistently described as comfortable, with friendly hosts on hand. The location earns real praise: Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Batsford Arboretum, the Rollright Stones and the Chipping Norton farmers market are all within easy reach, and the surrounding fields are dark enough at night to see the aurora on a good one.

Two caveats matter. The building is divided into two halves and noise carries between them, so a dog that barks at unfamiliar sounds may be disturbed by neighbours or disturb them. The access track is rough and heavily potholed. The bathroom is dated, though it works perfectly well. On the paperwork, up to two dogs are accepted, and no pet fee is published, so confirm the charge when you book.

Write-ups from dog owners are still thin here, so the 4.4/5 paw rating is a provisional read. On the evidence so far this suits a settled, sociable dog and owners who want quiet, fields underfoot and Cotswold villages a short drive away.
