How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 2 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 12 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.4/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: September 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Sunset 128 is a chalet on the Sandown Bay Holiday Centre, up on the clifftop between Sandown and Yaverland on the east coast of the Isle of Wight. What makes it work for a dog is the site rather than the chalet: it is quiet, and there is a lot of open grass, which is exactly what an older or slower dog wants at the end of a travelling day - somewhere to potter about without being marched anywhere.
Guests arriving with dogs describe the place as straightforwardly dog-friendly. The chalet is a traditional holiday unit, comfortable and well equipped, with a good supply of hot water and heaters and fans if you want them. The owners leave tea, milk and biscuits, send a welcome message before you travel, and help guests get a better rate on the car ferry, which is a genuine saving when the dog is coming too.
The route down to the beach is the thing to plan around. There is access close by, but it is a steep path - fine for a fit dog, awkward for anything old, short-legged or nervous on a slope. The seafront walk into Sandown is the flatter alternative and takes you along the bay, and Culver Down at the far end is the big open walk if you want an hour on the chalk.
The honest caveats: the chalet is showing its age in places, cleaning has been criticised for dust and hair left around, the mattress has been described as needing more than the topper it comes with, and towels are not supplied despite the listing suggesting otherwise - pack your own, and one for the dog. Parking is close by but awkward, and can be tight in high season. Sandown itself is a little frayed at the edges.
Best suited to a couple with an older or easy-going dog after a quiet, good-value base by the sea, who are not too fussy about the fittings.
