The Annexe, Middleham

The Annexe sits behind a working farm just outside Middleham in Wensleydale, and its biggest draw for dog owners is the enclosed field right next to the property. A dog can be let out for a run off the lead, and there is no through road outside the door, which is a rare combination in self-catering at this price.

Middleham is racehorse country and the walking starts at the doorstep, so guests with dogs tend to head straight out onto the moor and the gallops rather than driving anywhere. The village shop and a couple of pubs are a short walk away. The farm setting adds its own entertainment, with a pond and ducks next to the property, and dogs used to livestock settle quickly. The host is mentioned repeatedly for being welcoming and quick to answer questions, and arrivals often find local beer, cookies and milk waiting.

The annexe itself is modern, warm and thoughtfully laid out, with a comfortable bed and good views over the dale. It is compact, so it suits a couple with one dog rather than a larger party.

There are two things to go in with your eyes open about. Cleanliness is the recurring complaint: guests have found dog hair left on the lounge floor and rug from a previous stay, along with dirt down the sides of the sofa and around the cooker. If your dog sheds, or you are travelling with someone sensitive to animal hair, it is worth a quick check on arrival. The other is simply finding the place, because the annexe is tucked behind the farmyard and the signage is thin, so read the arrival email before you set off rather than relying on a satnav. Dog bowls are not provided, so pack your own, and light sleepers should know the geese start early.

At 4.6/5 it is a strong choice for a couple with a well-behaved dog who want open space and doorstep walking, and less suited to anyone expecting hotel-standard housekeeping.
