Bring your dog if

- The wider guest experience is strong - guests rate this 9.2/10 overall on booking platforms
Worth knowing
- Paw rating is based on 3 reviews - limited sample, treat as directional
- Pet fee: £20 per pet per night (max 2 pets) - research-verified; confirm at booking
- Shared corridors and common areas mean nervous or vocal dogs may find it harder to settle
How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 3 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 2,116 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.2/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.

Pet-friendly summary
The Boar's Head is the inn on the Ripley Castle estate, a stone village just off the A61 north of Harrogate, and it is set up for dogs in a way most country inns are not. Dogs eat with you: they are welcome on a lead in the snug and the bar areas, and lunch, dinner and breakfast are all served there, so nobody has to take turns sitting upstairs with the dog.
Dog-friendly rooms are limited and worth booking by phone. They are courtyard rooms, and only some of them - the first-floor Courtyard Double is not suitable for guests with dogs, while Poacher's Den, a ground-floor courtyard suite with its own lounge area, is the dedicated dog-friendly suite. The charge is £20 per dog, per night, and the inn takes up to two. What comes with the room is generous: a bed, bowls and a treat bag, and the kitchen has been known to send a sausage out at breakfast.
The village itself is much of the reason to come. Ripley is a postcard-pretty estate village with the castle grounds and open country immediately beyond it, Brimham Rocks is a short drive for a proper day on the moor, and the A1 is close enough that this works as a stopover as well as a destination.
Two things temper it. The dog rules arrive as a fairly long written list, which reads as heavy-handed at a place that trades on its dog welcome - and, as guests have pointed out, no equivalent list arrives for children. And there is no outdoor dog wash, which tells in Yorkshire weather when you come back off the moor with a wet, muddy dog and a carpeted room to walk through.
It earns a 4.5/5 paw rating. Best suited to walkers who want their dog beside them at dinner as well as on the hill, and who will ring ahead to secure one of the few rooms that take them.
