How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 1 pet-mention guest review sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 10 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 8.3/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.

Pet-friendly summary
The Cosy Cowshed is a single-storey barn conversion in Dalwood, a village in the Blackdown Hills on the East Devon border. It sleeps four in two bedrooms, and the conversion has been done well: open-plan living with a wood burner, underfloor heating throughout, and a shower guests rate as the equal of a good hotel's. Outside there is a decent enclosed garden with a lawn, planting and a seating area, and off-road parking at the door.
One well-behaved dog is welcome, and the shape of the building suits one - everything on the ground floor, no stairs, no shared corridors, and a secure garden to open the door onto. Dog owners rate the setting highly: the views are long, the lanes are quiet, and there is walking straight from the property as well as the coast at Lyme Regis and Sidmouth within a half-hour drive. Dalwood itself has a community shop, a post office and a pub, so a short evening walk has somewhere to end up.
The caveats are about housekeeping rather than the dog welcome, and one of them is serious. A party arrived to find the accommodation dirty, with dog mess left on the floor inside, and chose not to stay at all. That is a single report against a run of positive ones, and the property has otherwise been described as clean and well presented, but it is the kind of failure that matters more than usual when you are the next person letting a dog roll around on that floor. A separate visitor found one of the shower drains smelling strongly. Both read as changeover problems rather than anything structural, and both are worth a quick check on arrival.
The Blackdown Hills are underrated for walking and much quieter than the coast in season, with bridleways and green lanes from the village and the Jurassic Coast close enough for a beach day. Axminster is a few minutes away for supplies.
The Cosy Cowshed suits a couple, or a couple with children, travelling with one small or medium dog who want a well-finished, single-storey base for East Devon and will check the place over before they unpack.
