The Daffodil Hut

The Daffodil Hut is a shepherd's hut standing in its own field at West Halabezack, a few minutes from the village of Porkellis in west Cornwall, and what makes it work for dogs is simply how much room there is around it. There are no shared corridors, no neighbouring doors and no reception to walk a lead through - just the hut, a wood burner, an outdoor hot tub and grass in every direction, with horses grazing in the field alongside.

Dogs are welcome and owners who bring them describe the arrangement as uncomplicated: book the hut, bring the dog, and the outdoor space does the rest. What comes up again and again is the freedom the dogs get, running loose on the grass in front of the door rather than being walked in circles round a site. The hosts earn steady credit too, for answering quickly, sorting out extra wood without fuss and leaving local tips in the hut, including a pub over by Stithians Lake about ten minutes away.

The setting is deep countryside rather than coast, but it makes a workable middle-of-Cornwall base: St Michael's Mount, St Ives and the Lizard are all within reach for a day out, with quiet lanes and farmland at the door for a morning walk. The flip side of the seclusion is that the hut is genuinely hard to find first time, so get the directions and access details from the hosts before you set off rather than circling lanes with a restless dog in the back.

Two caveats matter for owners. The fencing has gaps at ground level, and a small or determined dog has got underneath it, so the field is not a substitute for an enclosed garden. Feedback has also carried a request that visitors keep their dogs properly under control, which tells you the surrounding land is shared with other guests rather than exclusively yours. On the practical side, the mattress is firm, the Wi-Fi is close to non-existent and the hut heats up in a warm spell.
