The Gallery, Gosport

The Gallery is a large whole-house rental in Gosport built for the kind of trip where three generations and a dog all turn up at once. The space is the point: a big kitchen, rooms that can be used flexibly, and no shared entrances or corridors to negotiate with a dog on a lead.

The pet terms are now published, and they shape who this suits. Up to three dogs can stay, at twenty-five pounds per dog covering a week or part week, and the house takes small to medium dogs only, so a larger breed is out however well behaved. The owners also ask that a dog which barks continuously is not brought here, out of consideration for the neighbours.

Dog owners describe the house itself as straightforwardly pet-friendly and easy to live in with animals around, and the location does a lot of the work. Gosport's amenities are close, the Solent waterfront and Stokes Bay are a short drive for a proper beach walk, and Alver Valley Country Park gives you open green space when the seafront is too blustery. The Portsmouth ferry makes a day across the harbour easy if the group wants a change of scene.

Two caveats stand out, and both come from guests who brought dogs. The garden is not currently secure: the fence and the back gate need attention, so a dog that tests boundaries should not be left out there unsupervised, and a long line is worth packing. Carpets have also been described as needing a clean on arrival, which is worth factoring in if anyone in the party is allergy-prone or the dog will be lying on them all week.

Best suited to a group travelling with up to three small or medium dogs who want plenty of indoor space near the Solent, and who will supervise the garden rather than rely on it.
