The Lodge is a self-catering cottage in the grounds of Edge Hall, a few minutes' walk from the High Street in Hadleigh, a Suffolk market town about ten miles west of Ipswich. Being in town rather than out on a lane is the practical draw for dog owners: the shops, pubs and cafes are walkable, so the dog comes along on the errands instead of waiting in the car, and the field paths and country walks around the town start close by.
Dogs are clearly expected rather than merely tolerated. Guests arriving with one have found treats put out alongside the homemade cake and the tea and coffee, and up to two dogs are welcome. The ground floor suits an older or less mobile dog and its owner alike, with a twin bedroom and en-suite, a bathroom with a powerful shower over the bath, and a large, well equipped kitchen, so a wet dog and a muddy pair of boots need never go upstairs. A small patio with a table and chairs opens off the lounge and dining room.
Two things are worth knowing before booking. The patio is not securely enclosed, so a small dog or one inclined to wander needs watching rather than being let out on its own. And the lodge sits within the working grounds of the main house, with the route to the car park, the vegetable garden and a utility room all close by, so there is foot traffic past the windows and the patio at times.
