The gardens are the big draw. They are large and well kept, and guests with dogs describe using them for morning and evening runarounds without needing to leave the grounds. One couple came especially so their city dog could see his first forest, and spent part of the stay playing and taking photos on the lawn.
Dogs are not allowed in the dining room, but the hotel works around that rather than leaving you to choose between dinner and your dog. Guests with dogs mention breakfast being served to them in one of the lounges, and staff happily letting a dog settle in the lounge while its owners ate. Staff come up again and again as friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is calm, which suits dogs that unsettle easily.
Sway itself works well with a dog. The open heath and woodland of the New Forest is on the doorstep, and there are two dog-friendly pubs within walking distance of the hotel. The station is a couple of minutes away on foot, so this is one of the easier New Forest bases to reach by train with a dog.
The drawbacks are mostly about cost and layout. The fee is charged per dog, and a couple travelling with two very small dogs felt that was steep. The Cosy Loft rooms are off-limits to dogs, so book a first floor room. Plenty of other guests bring dogs too, which is good company for a sociable dog but worth knowing if yours is reactive. Some reviews also describe parts of the building, particularly the rooms in the Grange, as tired and in need of attention.
For a quiet New Forest break with forest walks from the door and staff who make room for your dog in the lounges, it is a strong choice.
