The Nest Box is a converted Victorian henhouse at Red House Farm, tucked into five and a half acres of grounds at Gissing, a few miles from Diss in south Norfolk. It sleeps two, and the appeal for anyone travelling with a dog is the sheer amount of space to wander before breakfast without leaving the property.
Up to two dogs can stay. The welcome pack is unusually generous, with eggs from the hens on site, bacon, sausages, bread and milk for the humans, and treats or chews plus poop bags for the dog. The owners are on hand with recommendations and local knowledge, and guests describe them as warm without being intrusive; several have been invited to village events during their stay.
The farm itself is the draw. Two Shetland ponies, geese, hens and cats live on the grounds, along with deer, pheasants and rabbits in the fields, so a dog that is steady around livestock and other animals will have a fascinating week. Guests regularly mention their dogs making friends with the residents. Beyond the farm there are quiet lanes and field walks, a dog-friendly pub in the village reached on foot across the countryside, and dog-friendly cafes in Diss.
It works as a base as well as a bolthole. Norwich, the Norfolk Broads and the coast are each roughly half an hour away, with Bungay and Beccles closer still. There are no shops in the village, so it is worth stocking up in Diss before checking in.
The property is small and set up for two people rather than a family, a railway line runs close enough to be heard, and water pressure is on the low side. A dog that chases poultry or bolts after wildlife would be a poor fit here.
