- Evidence: 3 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 20 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 8.8/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.

Pet-friendly summary
The Old Custom House is a rambling period house in Blythburgh, on the road that runs down to Southwold, and its big asset for anyone travelling with a dog is the garden. It is a large outdoor space with a garden room attached, which in a house of this age is more than you usually get, and it makes the difference between a dog that has somewhere to be and one that is underfoot all week. The village pub is across the road, and the Blythburgh marshes and the church are on the doorstep.
The house takes one well-behaved dog. The thing to weigh before booking is the staircase: it is a tight spiral, and it defeats some dogs entirely. A stair gate is provided to stop a dog attempting it, and guests whose dogs could not manage it have reorganised who sleeps where to work around the problem. If your dog is elderly, large, or unhappy on narrow open treads, this is the detail that decides whether the house works for you. The doorways are low as well, though that is a problem for people rather than dogs.
Beyond that it is a comfortable, characterful house, big enough for three couples, thoroughly equipped, with good parking and bedrooms that mostly have their own bathrooms.
Blythburgh is a genuinely good base for a dog. The Southwold turn is a minute away, and Walberswick, Thorpeness, Aldeburgh and Snape Maltings are all within a short drive, which puts a lot of beach, heath and estuary walking within reach.
Best suited to a group with one steady, sure-footed dog who want space, a garden and the Suffolk coast on the doorstep. It earns a 4.4/5 paw rating.
