The Old Dairy & The Old Stables, Cranworth

The Old Dairy and The Old Stables are two self-catering conversions on a working farm at Cranworth, in the Breckland countryside of central Norfolk. Both sit around an enclosed courtyard, with horses in the field next door and a public footpath directly across from the farm entrance. The location is deliberately central rather than coastal: Holkham, Great Yarmouth and most of the county's main draws are within an hour's drive.

The enclosed courtyard is the feature dog owners single out. Guests describe leaving the stable-style front door open for air without worrying about a dog wandering off, and rate the courtyard as genuinely secure even for determined small terriers. For anyone who has spent a self-catering week gate-checking, that matters.

The owners put real thought into arrivals. Dog towels, dog biscuits and treats appear consistently in guest accounts, alongside a fridge stocked with milk, juice and butter for the humans. Guests describe the hosts as approachable and easy to deal with.

Walking starts at the door. The country lanes around the farm carry very little traffic, and guests with dogs repeatedly name doorstep walks as the reason the location works. The trade-off is distance from shops and restaurants: this is a drive-to-everything base, not a walk-to-the-pub one.

Two caveats are worth knowing. Farm work can start early and has been loud enough to startle a dog before eight in the morning, with no advance warning given. Guests have also reported heating that was hard to turn down, hard pillows, and outdoor furniture that needed wiping before use.

This is a strong fit for owners who want a secure outdoor space, doorstep walking and a central base for touring Norfolk, and who do not mind driving for supplies. Light sleepers, and dogs that react badly to sudden noise, should factor in the early farm activity.
