The Old Granary, Forest of Dean

The Old Granary is a characterful barn conversion in the Forest of Dean, on the Gloucestershire side of the Wye Valley, and it is one of the better-kitted-out dog stays in this part of the country. Dogs stay free of charge, and the practical provision is unusually thorough: dog towels, poo bags and food and water bowls are laid out on arrival, and a boot room takes the wet gear and muddy paws before they reach the rest of the house.

Outdoor space is generous. There is a garden by the house and a walled field that guests travelling with dogs single out as ideal for proper exercise. One qualification matters, though: the enclosure is not complete. There is an opening at one end of the garden, so it is unwise to let a dog off the lead there without walking the boundary first, particularly with a dog that will test a fence line.

The lead rule matters here for a second reason. The cottage stands on a working farm in sheep country, so dogs need to be on a lead at all times around the property. Beyond the gate, though, the walking is superb. The cottage sits just outside the forest proper, a short drive from Mallards Pike, Symonds Yat and Cannop Ponds, with the pub at Woolaston within walking distance if you do not mind the hill on the way back.

The house itself is immaculate, generously sized and thoughtfully finished, with welcome touches like tea, coffee and fresh flowers. Two small caveats: the outdoor space doubles as parking, so a group arriving in several cars will find it tight, and the internet can drop out.
