The Old Stable, West Pennard

The Old Stable is a converted stable a few miles east of Glastonbury at West Pennard, sitting in open Somerset countryside between the Levels and the Mendips. It is a small, cosy whole-property let, and what comes through most about it is care: the owners leave milk, biscuits, tea and coffee for arrival, along with the small practical things that self-catering places often forget, from loo rolls and hand soap to spare pillows, books and puzzles.

For a dog it is a straightforward, low-stress stay. There are no shared spaces, no corridors and no other guests; the ground-floor bedroom has its own door straight outside, and the surrounding lanes and fields make for easy walking. Guests travelling with a dog have found it had everything they needed without hauling half the house down with them.

The one thing to get right before you book is the number of dogs. The property takes a single dog on request and that limit is real: guests who arrived expecting to bring more than one have had to sort it out by phone once their confirmation came through. The owners handled it well, but it made for an anxious start to a holiday. If you are travelling with two, agree it with the property in writing first rather than assuming.

Smaller gripes: the kitchen is compact, and housekeeping details have slipped on occasion, with a grubby freezer and sticky table coasters both coming up. The ground-floor bedroom's outside door is the only ventilation on that side, with no opening window, which is worth knowing in warm weather.

Best suited to a couple or small family with one well-settled dog who want a quiet rural base within easy reach of Glastonbury, Wells and the Levels.
