Pet-friendly summary
The Rest is a cosy self-catering flat in St Abbs, the little fishing village just along the coast from Coldingham, and it suits dog owners who want to spend their days on the clifftops and beaches of the Berwickshire coast. Sea views from the flat and garden, coastal paths from the door and friendly owners who live on site add up to a 4.7/5 paw rating from guests who stayed with their dogs.
Up to two dogs can stay. Guests describe the place as very dog friendly, and the owners, who have a dog of their own, are warm, helpful and quick to sort out any early niggles. The flat is warm and well equipped, with a good shower and help with laundry for sandy beach clothes, and it is bigger than the photos suggest, comfortably sleeping three adults and a dog.
The walking is the real draw. The harbour is about five minutes away, Coldingham Bay is a short stroll along the coastal path, and St Abbs Head and Mire Loch are close by. Dogs need to be on a lead on Coldingham Bay from June to September. The village has a couple of cafés and a small shop, and the nearest pub is about a mile and a half along the coast path.
There are a few things to know before booking. The garden is shared with the owners and is not enclosed, so dogs cannot be let off the lead there. Rabbits are everywhere, in gardens and along the streets, which can make a sighthound or any dog with a strong chase instinct hard work. Some guests have also found the décor a little tired and the kitchen short on cupboard space, and a softer mattress topper would help after long days of walking.
For couples or small families with a well-behaved dog who loves a long coastal walk, The Rest is a peaceful, friendly base for exploring St Abbs, Eyemouth and the Northumberland coast beyond.
