The Roost is a small contemporary guesthouse in a converted building on Cullompton High Street, in mid-Devon a couple of minutes from junction 28 of the M5, and it works best as a practical overnight stop for anyone driving south-west with a dog. Rooms are modern and a decent size to share with a dog, and one of them sleeps four, so a family travelling with a dog is not squeezed.
Dogs are taken on request rather than by default, which is the single most useful thing to know here. Owners who asked in advance have been allowed to bring them, small dogs included, so send a message before you book rather than assuming. Contact with the owner by email is quick and helpful, and check-in is contactless through a key code, which suits an anxious dog better than a busy reception desk - you go straight from the car to the room without waiting in a lobby.
Parking is free and directly behind the building, which removes the kerbside unloading that makes high-street stays awkward with a dog. A small patch of grass sits a few metres from the car park and gets used for first-thing toilet stops, and the town centre, a supermarket and quieter back lanes are all within a short walk.
Set your expectations on the surroundings. The car park and the rear of the building are scruffy, with litter and rubble around the edges and some of it visible on the flat roof outside the bathroom window; guests have said so plainly. Traffic noise carries through the front windows, so a light-sleeping dog is better off in a room at the back. There is no enclosed outdoor space, and no bowls, bed or towels are provided, so bring your own.
It suits a calm, well-mannered dog on a one or two night stop, particularly for travellers breaking an M5 journey or visiting family in mid-Devon. Dogs that need private outdoor space or a quiet setting will do better at a rural rental nearby.
