The Shippon is a converted farm building at Gowan Hall in Arkholme, a village in the Lune Valley in the north of Lancashire. It is a modern, light one-bedroom conversion for two, set well back in its own ground, with barn owls visible from the living room windows and walking in every direction.
The dog welcome is better than most properties of this size manage. Dogs get treats on arrival, and the garden is fully fenced with parking alongside it. Two separate guests have singled out the secure outdoor space, which for a one-bedroom let is not something to take for granted: it means a dog can be let out first thing without a lead and a coat. It suits a couple with one small or medium dog rather than a pack.
The honest caveat is that the place is hard to find the first time. The postcode covers a couple of miles of road, the building sits a long way back from it, and there is no sign at the entrance to the drive. Guests have driven past it more than once, and arriving in the dark has been described as awkward. Get directions from the owners before you set off, and try to arrive in daylight on your first night, particularly with a dog in the car.
Reports are otherwise good on cleanliness, equipment and general condition.
