How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 5 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 139 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 7.2/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Torrey Pines is a two-bedroom hot tub lodge on the Percy Wood golf and lodge park at Swarland, in a quiet, well-kept corner of Northumberland that makes a handy base for the coast. Guests who bring their dogs generally like it for space, location and walking paths, and it earns a 4.4/5 paw rating - but this is a page where the caveats matter as much as the positives.
Dogs are welcome, and the park's paths and surrounding woodland give plenty of easy walking. Dog owners like the roomy layout, the bath alongside the showers, the welcome bottle of fizz and crisps, and hosts who communicate well when things go smoothly. Holy Island, Bamburgh, Beadnell Bay and Alnmouth are all within a comfortable drive.
The recurring complaint is cleanliness, and much of it is about previous dogs. A run of guests, including some without pets, reported dog hair on the sofas and carpets, a lingering wet-dog smell and dog mess left on the decking. If you are bringing your own dog, pack a lint roller and your own cleaning kit, as dog owners have found no hoover or mop provided.
The hot tub is the other sore point. Many guests found it dirty, full of flies and leaves, not heating, or with a broken lid arm. There are also reports of broken blinds, patio doors that would not lock, a sofa bed in the living room rather than a true third bedroom, weak Wi-Fi, and slow replies from the hosts when problems were raised. Golf is included, but there is no buggy.
At its best, Torrey Pines is a spacious, peaceful lodge where dogs are genuinely welcome. Go in with realistic expectations on upkeep, ask the hosts to confirm the hot tub is clean and working before you travel, and it can work as a Northumberland base for a family with a dog.
