Two Four Four, Matlock

Two Four Four is a holiday house on Bakewell Road, the A6 that runs north out of Matlock through Darley Dale and on towards Bakewell. It is a whole house let to one party, and the thing guests notice first is how carefully it has been set up: everything labelled, cupboards stocked, tea and milk in the fridge, and a welcome pack that includes a discount voucher for a local pub.

The dog provision is unusually good, and it is provided rather than merely tolerated. Guests travelling with dogs have found towels put out for the dogs alongside the human ones, bowls in the kitchen, poo bags and a ball to throw. That level of preparation is rare enough to be worth mentioning: parties who normally pack their own bowls and towels have not needed to. The garden is enclosed and set up for sitting out, so a dog can be let out while you have a coffee, and the seating catches sun for most of the day.

Location is the other draw. The town centre and shops are a short walk, there is a bus stop down the road, and Darley Dale, Winster and the wider Peak District are within easy reach for longer walks. Parking is on a side street rather than at the door.

Two caveats. The A6 outside is a busy road. It quietens at night, and the host leaves ear plugs out in case it does not, but a dog that pulls towards traffic needs a lead on from the front door rather than at the gate. And the upstairs gets hot in warm weather, with open windows making limited difference, which is worth knowing if your dog struggles in heat.

The property's booking listing publishes no pet fee, weight limit or maximum number of dogs, so confirm those with the host when you book.

Best suited to a couple or a small family with one or two dogs who want a well-kept, well-stocked base within walking distance of Matlock and a short drive of the Peak District.
