How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 4 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 31 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.1/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Two Ways is a comfortable, well-kept cottage in Tansley, just outside Matlock, and dog owners who stay here tend to come away happy with it. It earns a 4.3/5 paw rating, and the main reason it falls short of a top score is practical rather than a matter of welcome: the garden is not fully enclosed.
The welcome itself is a strong point. Guests travelling with dogs mention a welcome basket on arrival that includes something for the dog as well as the humans, and the cottage is described as spotless, quiet at night and very well equipped, from the kitchen through to spare blankets. That cleanliness comes up again and again, which is reassuring for anyone worried about following a previous guest's dog into a holiday let.
The garden is the thing to plan around. It is a lovely spot to sit out and eat in the evening, but there is no gate at the top of the steps down to it, and dog owners consistently say they had to keep their dogs on a lead outside or watch them closely because of the lane beyond. The property description flags this, and several guests suggest a small gate would make the cottage close to perfect. If your dog is a bolter, bring a long line.
The location works well for walks. The cottage sits in a pretty lane on the edge of the Derbyshire Dales, with open countryside close by, and there is a dog-friendly pub a couple of minutes' walk away plus another a short drive off, both of which guests rate for food.
A few other points are worth knowing. Parking is tight, with residents' cars sometimes making it awkward to pull out, and guests mention a cleaning charge and a breakage deposit on top of the booking price. The digital check-in process was found fiddly on a phone by at least some guests.
For a couple or small family with a well-behaved, lead-friendly dog, Two Ways is a cosy and very clean base for the Peak District. Owners of dogs that need to run loose in a secure garden should look elsewhere.
