Pet-friendly summary
Ty Coed is a two-hundred-year-old stone cottage at Pentre Castell in Llanberis, at the foot of Yr Wyddfa in Eryri, and for a walking dog it is about as well placed as a base can be. The Llanberis Path up the mountain starts a short way along the road, Llyn Padarn and its lake path lie below, the ruined tower of Dolbadarn Castle stands next door, and trails leave the village in most directions. Guests who brought a dog describe walking straight off the doorstep, which is exactly what the position offers.
The cottage is let as a whole property and sleeps a small family. It has been carefully renovated: small, snug and properly equipped, with a wood burner that makes the living room the warmest place in the house and a tiny but well-stocked kitchen. Parking is immediately outside. The host is warmly spoken of, leaves a welcome basket on arrival and responds quickly when something needs sorting. Two well-behaved dogs are welcome, though not in the bedrooms, and because you have the whole cottage there are no shared spaces to work around.
Be realistic about an old building. The recurring complaint is cold and damp. Guests have found the bedrooms and the kitchen chilly, with the heating controls locked so the temperature is adjusted by the owner rather than by you, which is done promptly when asked but is not something you can change at three in the morning. Several also mention a musty smell, particularly in the smaller room.
The other point dog owners should know is that the soft furnishings hold on to previous dogs. Guests have found hair on the sofa and chairs and a lingering doggy smell in the room, and while the cottage is cleaned thoroughly that is hard to get out of upholstery. If anyone in your party is sensitive to animal allergens, this is the cottage's weak point.
Ty Coed earns a 4.4/5 paw rating. It suits a dog or two and a couple or small family who are here to walk the mountain and the lake and will take a snug, characterful old cottage on those terms. It is not the choice for anyone who needs control of their own heating or wants a spotless modern let.
