Underdean Lodge is a quirky little conversion at Blakeney, on the eastern edge of the Forest of Dean where Gloucestershire runs down to the Severn. It is comfortable and better equipped than its size suggests, with good bedding and towels, and the owners have a reputation for answering questions quickly, which is the sort of thing that matters when you are travelling with a dog and need to check something before you book.
The pet arrangements here are specific, and knowing them in advance changes whether this is the right booking. Dogs stay downstairs, and a stair gate is provided to keep them off the first floor. Guests understand the reasoning and most are content with it, but a dog that will not settle alone overnight means somebody sleeping downstairs on a two-seater sofa, which is not a comfortable week. If your dog sleeps in the bedroom at home, factor that in.
The outdoor space is the second thing to check. Guests have reported the garden without a gate, so there is nowhere genuinely secure to let a dog out unsupervised, and were told this was a temporary state of affairs. The lodge also sits on a road with a fair bit of traffic, and walks from the door are on-lead affairs. That said, the Forest of Dean proper is minutes away and gives you as much off-lead woodland walking as any dog could want, with the Severn shoreline in the other direction.
So this is a good base rather than a dog-proof house: fine for a settled dog who is happy downstairs and content on a lead until you reach the forest, less so for a young dog who needs a secure garden to burn off steam in. Taken on those terms it is a well-kept, good-value stay and earns 4.4/5.
