Weavers Cottage, Carlton in Cleveland

Weavers Cottage is a large character cottage in Carlton in Cleveland, a small village on the northern edge of the North York Moors with the Cleveland Way running along the hills behind it. It sleeps a big group and it is set up for the kind of holiday where three generations and the dogs all arrive at once, rather than for a couple's weekend away.

The enclosed rear garden does most of the work for dog owners. Guests travelling with dogs describe letting them out safely while children play in the same space, and dog bowls are put out ready. The owners live next door, and it is an owner-run property in the fullest sense: guests report homemade cake waiting on arrival, help getting a table at the village Thai restaurant, and advice on where to walk. Dogs coming back caked in moor mud are treated as normal rather than as a problem.

The rules are stricter than the warmth of the welcome suggests, and two of them shape the holiday. Dogs cannot be left alone anywhere on the property, garden included, so a group planning full days at Whitby, Saltburn or Thirsk needs a plan for the dog rather than an empty cottage. The size limit also rules out large breeds, which is worth checking before you book for a mixed group.

The village is the other draw. There is a pub a couple of minutes' walk that has a well-regarded Thai kitchen, walking starts at the door, and Roseberry Topping and the Cleveland Way are close enough for a morning out. The coast at Saltburn and Whitby is around an hour.

Best suited to a family or multi-generation group with one or two small or medium dogs who want the moors and the coast in the same week, and who are happy to take the dogs along on days out.
