Wedgwood is a big, old-fashioned Salcombe villa on Allenhayes Road, set on the hillside above the town with views down over the estuary. It sleeps a large party, and the thing dog owners keep coming back to is simply that there is room: two separate lounges, a wide kitchen-diner with a proper table, and enough storage that a week's food and a dog's kit are not fighting over the same worktop. Families travelling with children and a dog rate it highly on that basis.
The garden is the caveat. It exists, it is a real outdoor space, and more than one party has suggested it could be made more secure for dogs, so treat it as somewhere to supervise rather than a sealed run. Up to two pets are allowed per booking.
The walk into Salcombe takes a few minutes downhill to the harbour, the ferry and the shops, and the climb back is honest work - all of Salcombe is hilly, so an older or short-legged dog will feel it. Once you are down there the estuary beaches and the passenger ferry across to East Portlemouth open up the sandy stretches at Mill Bay, and the coast path runs on from there towards Gara Rock.
Two other things to know. Parking on Allenhayes Road is genuinely difficult in season: leave the space and it tends to be gone, which matters more than usual if you are driving the dog to a beach each morning. And the house is well used rather than freshly done - guests describe it as homely but tired in places, with cleanliness that has been variable between changeovers. Neither is a problem for a muddy-paws sort of holiday, but it is not a boutique finish.
Best suited to a large family or two families sharing, with a dog that is happy on lead in the garden and up for a hill twice a day. Wedgwood earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.
