Pet-friendly summary
Weir Cottage is a lovely, quiet spot for a couple and a dog who want a few days of garden time and country walks. The cottage sits on the Leeds Castle estate with a large, fully fenced garden that runs right down to the weir and the River Len, and dog owners consistently say it is the garden that makes the stay: secure enough to let a dog roam off the lead, with ducks and moorhens on the water and a seating area and barbecue for long evenings outside.
Inside it is small but well thought through. The whole upper floor is a beamed bedroom, the shower room is modern and the kitchen has what you need for self-catering, though there is no dishwasher or washing machine. Guests are greeted with a welcome pack, and the estate has been known to include castle tickets for the length of the stay.
The big caveat for dog owners is the castle itself. Dogs are not allowed into the Leeds Castle grounds and gardens, and with a dog you are limited to the public footpaths that cross the estate. Several guests travelling with dogs say this surprised them and that it was not always obvious which paths were which, so plan your walks with an OS map before you go. The George Inn in Leeds village is roughly an 18-minute walk away.
A couple of other points are worth knowing. Access is on foot through the garden of the neighbouring Keepers House, whose owners have a dog of their own, which suits some guests less than others. The cottage is also a little tired in places, with flaking exterior paint, stiff kitchen doors and a firm sofa, and it can get very warm upstairs in summer.
For a peaceful break where your dog can safely enjoy a big riverside garden, Weir Cottage earns a 4.7/5 paw rating. Just go in knowing that the castle grounds themselves are off limits to dogs.
