West Ridge Bungalow, Seaton

West Ridge Bungalow sits on Harepath Hill above Seaton, in the East Devon hills a couple of miles back from the Jurassic Coast. It is a whole-house rental, and the reason to book it with a dog is the ground it comes with: a large garden that runs back into an orchard and a paddock, which is genuine space to let one off the lead without leaving the property.

Up to three dogs are welcome. That is unusual for a self-catering house of this size and makes it a rare fit for a multi-dog household. No pet fee appears on the property's booking listing, which is not the same as there being none, so confirm the charge with the owner before you travel. Dogs are asked to be well behaved, which is a fair request given the open grounds.

Seaton is about ten minutes down the hill, with a long shingle beach that keeps dog-friendly sections open year round and a seasonal restriction on the central stretch over the summer. The Seaton Wetlands reserve nearby gives flat, easy walking. Beer is the next cove along, a working fishing village with dog-welcoming pubs, and Branscombe beyond it opens onto some of the best coast path walking in the county. Sidmouth is roughly twenty-five minutes west if you want a bigger seafront.

Feedback on the house is mostly very warm, with the views, the grounds and the owner's welcome all coming in for praise, but it is not uniform. Guests have reported a strong musty smell indoors and broadband that only reaches the kitchen at a usable speed, so if you need to work from the house, or you are sensitive to damp, raise both before booking. Key collection has also caught people out, so agree the arrangement in advance.

Best suited to a family or group travelling with dogs who want countryside and grounds rather than a seafront address, and who expect to be outdoors most of the day anyway. It earns a 4.5 out of 5 paw rating.
