Whiddon Well is a charming, cosy cottage on Higher Whiddon Farm, a small horse farm on the edge of Dartmoor just outside Ashburton, and it is a lovely spot for a countryside break with a dog. Guests with dogs describe a warm welcome from the owners, who keep dogs and horses of their own, and it earns a 4.6/5 paw rating.
The cottage is properly set up for dogs. There is a separate secure pen where dogs can run off the lead, a dog house, and an outside tap for washing off muddy paws after a day on the moor. Up to two dogs can stay. Because there are horses, chickens, sheep and cows around the farm, dogs need to stay on a lead outside the cottage, which most owners find easy enough given the pen.
The owners are consistently described as friendly and helpful, and the cottage itself as immaculate, comfortable and well stocked, with a wood burner and lovely rural views. Many guests enjoy seeing the horses every day.
The setting is a big plus for walkers. You can walk from the cottage into Ashburton for pubs and places to eat, the open moor and its safe dog walks are a five to ten minute drive away, and the coast at Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and Salcombe is within reach for day trips. There is no shop close by, so bring basic supplies such as milk for the first evening.
A few caveats are worth knowing. The garden is not private, and one guest was unhappy to find mess from the owners' dogs left on the lawn in front of the cottage, which made evening trips outside a careful business. The same stay found that the patio doors could not be locked, and another guest found the plastic mattress protectors made the beds hot.
For a dog owner wanting a peaceful farm base with Dartmoor on the doorstep and a secure space for dogs to run, Whiddon Well is a very good choice.
