Wold View, Scarborough

Wold View is a large, recently finished holiday house at Ratten Row in Seamer, a village a few miles inland of Scarborough, and it was built with space in mind. Dogs get the run of a generous enclosed outdoor area, and guests travelling with them pick that out first: room to let a couple of dogs stretch their legs safely without leaving the property.

The house is bright and well appointed, with a roof balcony looking out over the Wolds, a hot tub, modern bathrooms and enough room for a large group. The village works in its favour too. A pub and a wine bar are a short walk away, so the evening need not involve a car, and the coast at Scarborough is about fifteen minutes' drive, with the North York Moors a little further north.

Housekeeping is the one thing to watch. Standards have slipped at least once between changeovers, with a dirty oven and dog hair and food left on the lounge floor by a previous party. That cuts both ways for a dog owner: it confirms dogs really do stay here, but it is worth running a hoover round before letting your own dog settle. The wifi has also dropped out during a stay, which matters if anyone is working through the week.

The site the house stands on welcomes well-behaved dogs generally, and its bar takes them at the outside tables where food and drink are served, though not indoors - useful if you would rather not drive out for an evening meal. No pet fee, dog limit or breed restriction is published, so agree those with the owner before booking. Taken as a whole this is a strong dog-friendly house for a group, let down only by cleaning that has not always matched the standard of the building. It earns 4.5 out of 5.
